Description

One look at these glorious stems and you can’t help but be transported to somewhere more exotic. Despite its name, though, ‘Lucky Bamboo’ isn’t actually a member of the bamboo family at all! Nevertheless, these Dracaena Sanderiana are a species that have been used for millennia to invoke good luck and prosperity. Not only that, but they are also a great way to bring unusual and easy to care for greenery into the home or office.  With just a small amount of water (ideally rainwater or filtered water) to keep them going, they’ll grow up to 90cm tall – and can survive in a pot or glass vase.

According to tradition, the number of stems you have, creates luck in different areas of your life; with one stem representing truth and commitment, two stems representing love and three invoking happiness and new beginnings. Five stems promote success, and while the number seven is connected to good luck; four is the opposite.

Stems are sold individually, without leaves (don’t worry, they’ll grow!). Our Lucky Bamboo plants are approximately 40cm in length.

Water / Feed: Well drained potting mix (damp but not dry) or keep in a vase with water (ideally filtered or rainwater) covering the roots and change the water every fortnight. Feed monthly.

Pet / Child: While not toxic to humans, it is toxic for cats and dogs and will make them quite poorly. It’s stick-like appearance may be tempting for some pooches so keep out of reach!

Temperature / Humidity: Lovers of warm humid environments, they thrive in temperatures from 15-35 degrees. Keep away from cold drafts.

Soil Type: Lucky Bamboo prefers acidic soil. Repot when the roots are too tight for their container. If you start out in water, as the plant matures, it will benefit from being planted in soil.

Light / Position: Lucky bamboo likes moderate or indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sun as the leaves might become scorched (so avoid placing your plant in front of a bright window).

Growth / Spread: Fast growing, they can reach 50cm in 6 months and will ultimately grow up to a meter tall.

Geographic Origins: Native to Central Africa.

Please note: images show how this plant may look at various stages of maturity. The size you choose may look different. Any decorative pots shown in photographs are not supplied with the plant (which is sent out in a simple nursery pot). They do however make excellent potted plants and, if you wish to pot yours up, we do have a wide range of pots and vases on our website to choose from.
