Magnolia Susan
Description
With showy fragrant flowers, the Magnolia ‘Susan’ is truly captivating. Compact and deciduous, it’s great for smaller gardens and containers and through springtime (April-May) she’ll reward you with fragrant, tulip-like flowers. Reddish-purple on the outside, they open up to reveal soft pink centres which complement the oval 15cm long leaves of the plant creating a stunning garden feature.
Happiest planted quite shallow, in full sun or partial shade, these Magnolias prefer well drained but consistently moist soil (which may even extend the flowering period). Keep in a sheltered spot as they can be susceptible to late frosts and chilly winds, which will impact the flowers in particular.
Pruning is generally not required, however, if desired, you can prune lightly once the flowers have subsided. Mulch in early spring and be careful not to let them dry out.
