Verbena Bonariensis
Description
For several months from midsummer, the tall, upright stems of this much-loved perennial are topped with clusters of tiny lilac-purple flowers. It is ideal for adding height without density, and it makes an excellent filler in the border, because its stiff stems will help support neighbouring plants that might otherwise need staking. Verbena bonariensis also mixes well with ornamental grasses, while its nectar-rich flowers will help sustain bees and butterflies well into autumn. Eventual height & spread:

Borderline hardy (will need protection in winter in colder areas)Care tips:
In cold conditions Verbena bonariensis can suffer dieback if cut back in autumn, so it’s best to leave the plant until spring and cut back the old growth when you see the new shoots emerging at the base. Also it’s a good idea to mulch around the base of the plant with a deep, dry mulch in winter to help protect the plant. Where the plant is grown in partial shade the stems may need to be supported – if this is necessary use natural materials such as brushwood or twiggy pea-sticks. It can self seed so if you don’t want it spreading then trim off spent flowers before they go to seed.
