Brilliantly hardy, these clump-forming perennials bring life to any style of garden – from city courtyard to informal cottage. Low to the ground, they also work well as edging plants and for underplanting beneath trees roses and shrubs.

With ruffled, rounded reddish-brown leaves, come late spring they produce slender stems bearing small white flowers that last into summer. In sheltered spots, they should retain their foliage all year round; but if it does drop, then they’ll return in the next season.

Although very self-sufficient, they do benefit from annual mulching (to retain moisture) and its worth removing dead flowers too. To save them from becoming too woody and tired, it’s best to divide and replant every 3 years or so as well.
