Highlights:

  • Flowering Season: June to September

  • Height & Spread: 45–60cm height | 20–30cm spread

  • Position: Full sun | Moist, fertile, well-drained soil

  • Great for: Wildflower meadows, wildlife gardens, raised beds, naturalistic planting

Why We Love It:

Wild poppies (Papaver rhoeas) are a timeless favourite for their vivid red blooms and delicate, fluttering petals. They’re easy to grow and self-seed freely, making them ideal for rewilding a patch of garden or creating a relaxed, meadow-style border. A vital nectar source for pollinators, they also look beautiful mixed with cornflowers and daisies for a stunning seasonal display.

Planting & Care Tips:

  • When to Plant: Sow directly outdoors from March to May or late August to October

  • Where to Plant: Open, sunny spots in light, well-drained soil

  • Spacing: Broadcast thinly, then thin seedlings to around 15–20cm apart

  • Care Notes: Water during dry spells and avoid over-fertilising—poppies thrive in poorer soils. Leave some seed heads for wildlife or natural reseeding

The Nunhead Gardener Recommends:

Perfect for creating a wildlife-friendly patch in South London gardens, verges, or planters. Pair with corn marigold and oxeye daisy for a traditional wildflower mix that supports bees and butterflies all summer long.
