Highlights:
Harvesting Season: June to September
Height & Spread: 90–120cm height | 30–45cm spread
Position: Full sun | Moist, fertile, well-drained soil
Great for: Wildlife gardens, flower borders, cutting gardens, wildflower-style displays
Why We Love It:
This Opium Poppy mixture produces tall, graceful stems topped with eye-catching blooms in soft pinks, rich purples, whites and mauves—each with its own unique, intricate shape. The dried seed heads are just as striking and can be left for winter interest or used in floral arrangements. Easy to grow and a magnet for pollinators, these heritage-style poppies bring texture and colour to any sunny border.
Planting & Care Tips:
When to Plant: Sow outdoors in early spring (March–May) or late summer/early autumn for naturalised growth
Where to Plant: Directly into open ground in a sunny, well-drained spot
Spacing: Thin seedlings to 30cm apart
Care Notes: Keep soil moist during germination, avoid transplanting (they don’t like root disturbance), and allow seed heads to develop if you’d like to collect your own seeds or enjoy architectural interest
The Nunhead Gardener Recommends:
Looks particularly beautiful planted en masse with other meadow-style flowers like cornflowers and nigella. Let some seed heads dry naturally for stunning winter silhouettes and to encourage self-seeding for years to come.
