Why We Love It:
Wild Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is a must-have for organic and wildlife-friendly gardeners. With clusters of pinky-purple bell-shaped flowers that bees adore, it’s a fantastic pollinator plant and a valuable addition to the compost bin. Rich in nutrients, comfrey leaves can also be turned into a potent natural liquid fertiliser—ideal for feeding tomatoes and leafy crops. Tough, fast-growing, and low-maintenance, it’s a real garden workhorse.
Planting & Care Tips:
When to Plant: Sow outdoors from March to May or August to October
Where to Plant: In a permanent spot (it’s deep-rooted and long-lived!)
Spacing: 45–60cm apart
Care Notes: Water during dry spells in the first season. Cut back regularly to encourage fresh growth and collect leaves for compost or comfrey tea. Avoid planting too close to delicate crops due to its vigorous growth
The Nunhead Gardener Recommends:
Perfect for planting near compost bins or in a wildlife border. Use harvested leaves to mulch fruiting plants or brew into a high-potash feed for hungry crops like tomatoes and courgettes.
