Why We Love It

Fritillaria meleagris is prized for its unusual, chequered blooms that nod gently on slender stems, lending a naturalistic, almost wildflower charm to spring gardens. These delicate-looking plants are surprisingly hardy, thriving in moist soils and naturalising beautifully over time.

They are especially striking when planted in drifts through long grass or combined with other spring woodland flowers such as primroses, anemones, or bluebells for a tapestry of colour and texture.

How to Plant & Grow

• Plant from September to November.
• Choose a moist but well-drained site in full sun or partial shade.
• Plant bulbs 8–10cm deep and 10cm apart.
• Water well after planting, especially in dry spells.
• Leave foliage to die back naturally to strengthen bulbs for the following year.
