Why We Love It:
‘Jalapeño’ is one of the most popular chilli peppers worldwide — and for good reason. It’s incredibly easy to grow, reliably productive, and offers just the right level of heat for a wide range of dishes. The fruits can be picked green for a fresher taste or left to ripen to a bold red for extra sweetness and spice. Ideal for home cooks and chilli lovers alike!
Sowing & Growing Tips:
When to Sow: Plant young plants outdoors or in containers from May once all risk of frost has passed
Germination Time: (For reference if sowing seeds) 10–21 days at 20–25°C
Where to Grow: Greenhouse, sunny patio, containers, sheltered raised beds
Care Notes: Water regularly, especially during dry spells, and feed weekly with a high-potash fertiliser once fruiting starts. Provide support with a small cane if plants become heavy with fruit. Harvest fruits continuously to encourage more production.
The Nunhead Gardener Recommends:
Grow alongside tomatoes and basil for a Mediterranean-style container garden. Jalapeños are delicious sliced into nachos, stuffed and baked, pickled for preserving, or added to fresh summer salsas for a gentle kick.
