Description
Also known as the ‘Mimosa’ Acacia Dealbata are evergreen shrubs that grow tall and produce soft bright yellow flowers. Native to Australia, and fast-growing, Mimosas have dark green almost fern-like leaves.
Happy in pots and patio containers or in the ground, they prefer sheltered spots and are drought-hardy too. Flowering in winter and spring (November to April), they bring welcome colour to the garden; their golden pompom flowers and strong honey-scented blooms lifting any space.
With little need for pruning (unless you want to) and resilient to pests, they’re a great option for the time-pressed gardener. If you do decide to prune, Mimosas respond well, but be sure to wait until flowering has finished and don’t prune after late summer to avoid impacting on flowering season.
Best grown in a southerly or south-westerly position in well-drained soil, they are survivors in lower temperatures too (though may need protection from harsher frosts). Elegant and graceful, they take more than a decade to reach full height (8-12m) and can spread between 2-4m wide.
