Why We Love It:
Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), also known as bee balm, produces masses of spiky lavender-pink flowers that are adored by bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Its fragrant leaves can also be used to make a refreshing herbal tea. Low-maintenance, long-flowering, and a bold addition to borders, it’s perfect for adding colour, movement, and scent to wildlife-friendly gardens.
Planting & Care Tips:
When to Plant: Sow indoors from February to April or directly outdoors after the last frost
Where to Plant: Sunny or lightly shaded spot with rich, moist but well-drained soil
Spacing: 45–60cm apart
Care Notes: Water regularly in dry weather, mulch to retain moisture, and deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering. Divide clumps every few years to maintain vigour
The Nunhead Gardener Recommends:
Plant alongside echinacea, rudbeckia, and lavender for a pollinator paradise. Ideal for creating a naturalistic planting scheme that offers beauty and benefits to bees and butterflies alike.
