Why We Love It:
French tarragon is cherished for its delicate aniseed flavour, essential in classic dishes like béarnaise sauce and perfect with chicken, fish, and eggs. It’s a compact, elegant herb that rewards regular harvesting with fresh, aromatic leaves throughout the growing season. Once established, it’s relatively low maintenance and brings both culinary value and soft, airy structure to planting schemes.
Planting & Care Tips:
When to Plant: Sow indoors from March to April, or outdoors from May onwards once frosts have passed
Where to Plant: A sunny, sheltered position with free-draining soil or in containers
Spacing: 30–45cm apart
Care Notes: Avoid overly wet soil, especially in winter. Water moderately and harvest regularly to encourage fresh growth. Cut back in autumn and protect roots in colder months.
The Nunhead Gardener Recommends:
Grow in a terracotta pot to ensure excellent drainage and move closer to the kitchen for easy harvesting. Pairs beautifully with chives and parsley for a classic herb trio.
