Why We Love It:

Produces striking purple flower heads topped with elegant bracts that resemble butterfly wings, creating a vibrant and architectural display. This variety is especially valued for its compact habit, making it ideal for smaller gardens and terrace planting often found across South London. Highly fragrant and loved by bees, it’s a wonderful addition to wildlife-friendly gardens and looks fantastic planted in groups or mixed with other Mediterranean herbs.

Planting & Care Tips:

  • When to Plant: Sow indoors from February to April, or outdoors once the risk of frost has passed

  • Where to Plant: A sunny, sheltered spot with excellent drainage

  • Spacing: 35–45cm apart

  • Care Notes: Avoid overly wet soil, especially in winter. Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage repeat blooms.

The Nunhead Gardener Recommends:

Plant alongside rosemary, thyme, and ornamental grasses to create a drought-tolerant Mediterranean-style display that thrives in sunny London gardens and terraces.
