Description
The Asplenium “Crispy Wave” is an attractive and very collectible member of the bird’s nest fern family. This variation features long, lusciously green fronds with deeply crimped edges. In prime condition, this plant stands well on its own as an eye-catching centre-piece. As well as being a worldwide ornamental houseplant, Asplenium shoots are served as ‘Shan Su’ in Taiwan. This is a stir-fried vegetable dish with garlic and chilli. Crispy Wave’s love of humidity makes it the perfect plant to add a touch of greenery to well-lit bathroom. Try to ensure that this fern’s compost is kept moist during the spring and summer. Water the compost rather than the central rosette. An occasional feed of diluted fertiliser through the growing season will keep the fronds green and lush. Pet / Child Perfectly safe for children, dogs, cats and other pets. Temperature / Humidity This fern prefers room temperatures slightly lower than average. Winter room temperatures below 10°C (50°F) should be avoided. Increase humidity by misting regularly and standing the pot on a moist pebble tray. Soil Type As Asplenium grows, it should be repotted in a quality potting compost. The addition of gravel or pearlite will help to improve drainage. Light / Position Crispy Wave will tolerate a wide range of light levels; from bright, indirect sunlight, to moderate shade. Avoid radiators and drafts. Health Benefits A good oxygenator, Crispy Wave converts Carbon Dioxide (CO2) to pure Oxygen during daylight photosynthesis. Growth / Spread After 10 to 20 years this long-lived fern will fill a space of about 1 metre. Geographic Origins This ancient fern grows wild in the tropical forests of southeast Asia and many Pacific islands.
