Asplenium Antiquum Osaka (Birds Nest Fern)
Description
More compact than it’s sibling, these Aspleniums are renowned for their ruffled shiny green leaves. Rainforest dwellers, they are often found high up in trees – growing in small gaps and nooks in their host’s branches or trunk.
Commonly called the Birds Nest Fern, they favour warm humid spots like bathrooms or kitchens but also need good exposure to light, so if you struggle to provide both, then pick a spot with great light and regularly mist your fern with water. Like many houseplants, avoid hard direct sun as this will burn their leaves. They’ll also be happy in moderately lit spaces too and are great on north or easterly facing window.
A real eye catcher, they are very easy to look after and we have some pots in our store that they’ll look great in! They love moist, well-drained soil and when watering, avoid pouring water onto the plant itself as this may promote rot. Instead, water around the soil edge.
Water / Feed: Water weekly during the spring and summer, and generally keep the soil moist but not wet. Don’t sit in water. They don’t need much feeding but a weak solution of liquid feed during growing season will help.
Pet / Child: Reported to be safe.
Temperature / Humidity: 16-21 degrees Celsius.
Soil Type: moist well drained compost mixed with drainage material like Perlite.
Light / Position: Bright, indirect light and low light
Growth / Spread: Spreading to 45cm it will grow up to 60cm tall.
Geographic Origins: East Asia
Please note: images show how this plant may look at various stages of maturity. The size you choose may look different. Any decorative pots shown in photographs are not supplied with the plant (which is sent out in a simple nursery pot). They do however make excellent potted plants and, if you wish to pot yours up, we do have a wide range of pots on our website to choose from.
