Why We Love It

Allium ‘Purple Sensation’ is one of the most dramatic and reliable ornamental onions, much loved for its tall stature and vibrant spherical blooms. Each flower head, up to 10cm across, creates a striking architectural presence in the garden and makes an excellent cut flower for arrangements.

Ideal for planting in groups or weaving through perennial borders, these alliums bring height and rhythm to planting schemes, complementing early summer perennials and roses. Their upright habit also makes them perfect companions for ornamental grasses, creating a modern, textural look.

As well as being stunning, they are also resilient and easy to grow, a low-maintenance choice for long-lasting impact.

How to Plant & Grow

  • Plant from September to December before the ground freezes.

  • Choose a sunny, well-drained spot — they thrive in lighter soils.

  • Plant bulbs 15cm deep and 15–20cm apart.

  • Water well after planting and keep soil from becoming waterlogged.

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally to feed the bulb for the following year.
