Description

Also known as ‘winter roses’ Hellebores are a great way to inject some floral colour into your garden (or home) at wintertime and early spring.

Evergreen, and hardy, these perennials are versatile when it comes to location and are suited to shady areas (they love a woodland setting!) or in partial sun. They can cope in sunnier spots so long as the soil doesn’t get too dry.

Their flowers last well into spring, providing nectar for early pollinators. Colours range from creamy white to dark red and even when not flowering, their deep green leaves and tender stems provide something visually unique too.

They stand up well to the winter cold and grow best in evenly moist soil. They should be planted from autumn until late spring and once established, don’t like to be moved again (or divided). They’ll naturally (but slowly) spread to fill a space by self-seeding. Naturally undemanding, they need little maintenance beyond removing old flower heads and feeding in late autumn and spring with a slow-release fertiliser (either side of flowering season).

Whilst they can be brought indoors, and are popular at Christmas, they tend not to like the warmth of most houses. They are also toxic to pets.

Colours may vary from the photographs shown. If you have a request for a particular colour, please contact us.
