Why We Love It:
Calendula officinalis, or Pot Marigold, is a hardworking favourite for every type of garden. Its glowing orange and golden blooms are not only a joy to look at but are also edible—perfect for garnishing salads or infusing oils. Loved by bees and incredibly easy to grow, calendula is great for filling gaps, deterring pests in the veg patch, or adding brightness to a sunny balcony.
Planting & Care Tips:
When to Plant: Sow outdoors from March to May or again in late summer for autumn blooms
Where to Plant: Sunny, sheltered spots in borders, containers, or raised beds
Spacing: 20–25cm apart
Care Notes: Deadhead regularly to encourage continuous flowering. Water in dry spells and remove spent blooms for a tidy appearance and a longer flowering period
The Nunhead Gardener Recommends:
Perfect for pairing with nasturtiums, herbs, or leafy greens in a kitchen garden. Try growing in pots near your front door or windowsill for a fresh supply of edible petals and a dash of summer colour.
