Why We Love It:
Arugula (also known as rocket) is a kitchen garden essential, prized for its fresh, spicy bite and fast-growing habit. It’s incredibly easy to grow, ideal for cut-and-come-again harvesting, and perfect for squeezing into smaller spaces. This resilient leafy green flourishes in cooler months too, extending your harvest well into autumn.
Sowing & Growing Tips:
When to Sow: Plant young plants outdoors from March onwards, continuing through summer for successive harvests
Germination Time: (For reference if sowing seeds) 7–10 days at 15–20°C
Where to Grow: Raised beds, containers, open ground, greenhouse borders
Care Notes: Keep soil evenly moist to prevent leaves from becoming too bitter. Provide some shade during the hottest part of summer to avoid bolting. Regular picking encourages fresh new growth.
The Nunhead Gardener Recommends:
Grow with lettuces and spring onions for a fresh, ongoing salad garden. Arugula is delicious tossed raw into salads, wilted into pastas, or used as a peppery topping for pizzas and flatbreads.
