Why We Love It:
‘Sweet Stem’ broccoli is a wonderfully versatile and productive variety, producing an abundance of slender, sweet shoots with tender florets and crunchy stems. Easier and faster to grow than traditional heading broccoli, it’s ideal for gardeners who love a frequent, extended harvest. Its mild, sweet flavour makes it a favourite for fresh eating or light cooking.
Sowing & Growing Tips:
When to Sow: Plant young plants outdoors from April onwards once the soil has warmed
Germination Time: (For reference if sowing seeds) 7–14 days at 15–20°C
Where to Grow: Open ground, raised beds, large containers
Care Notes: Water regularly, especially in dry spells, and protect from cabbage white butterflies by using mesh netting. Feed with a balanced fertiliser every few weeks to support steady, vigorous growth. Harvest stems when they are around 15cm long for the best flavour and texture.
The Nunhead Gardener Recommends:
Pair with lettuces and radishes for a quick-growing summer vegetable bed. ‘Sweet Stem’ broccoli is delicious stir-fried with garlic, blanched and tossed into salads, or simply roasted with a drizzle of olive oil.
