Why We Love It:
Black Kale (Cavolo Nero) is a striking, easy-to-grow variety producing long, crinkled, almost blue-black leaves packed with flavour and nutrients. It’s exceptionally hardy, providing fresh greens throughout autumn and winter when little else is available. Highly versatile in the kitchen and beautiful in the garden, it’s a must-have for gardeners who love productive, good-looking crops.
Sowing & Growing Tips:
When to Sow: Plant young plants outdoors from April to July for harvesting through autumn and winter
Germination Time: (For reference if sowing seeds) 7–14 days at 15–20°C
Where to Grow: Open ground, raised beds, large containers
Care Notes: Water regularly, especially in dry spells, and mulch around plants to conserve moisture. Protect young plants from cabbage white butterflies using mesh or fleece. Harvest lower leaves first to encourage a continual supply of new growth.
The Nunhead Gardener Recommends:
Grow alongside chard and beetroot for a vibrant and nutritious vegetable patch. Black Kale is delicious simply sautéed with garlic and olive oil, added to hearty soups, or blended into green smoothies for a nutritious boost.
