How to grow: A Windowsill Veg Patch
You don’t need a garden to grow some tasty green. In fact, a simple windowsill can be more than enough, and during National Gardening Week there’s something particularly satisfying about starting small and seeing what happens.
A windowsill veg patch is exactly that, small, manageable, and surprisingly productive. It’s also a daily reminder of growth. A few minutes here and there, watering, checking, harvesting, and suddenly you’re part of the process.
Top of the Crops
All you really need is a bright windowsill, south or west-facing is ideal, a few pots with drainage, and some good peat-free compost.
If you’re not sure where to begin, these are some of the easiest and most rewarding options:
Herbs
A sunny windowsill is perfect for herbs. Basil, parsley, chives and mint are all reliable and endlessly useful.
- Pot size: 10–15cm deep
- Spacing: Sow thinly or plant 2–3 small plants per pot
- Covering: Lightly cover seeds with a thin layer of compost
Keep them well watered, but not sitting in water. Pick regularly, snipping little and often encourages fresh growth. Most herbs will be ready to start harvesting in 3–5 weeks.
Rocket
Fast, leafy and peppery, one of the quickest wins.
- Pot size: 10–15cm deep
- Spacing: Sow thinly across the surface
- Covering: Light covering of compost (about 0.5cm)
Keep the compost consistently moist. Seedlings appear within a few days, and you can start harvesting baby leaves in as little as 4 to 6 weeks. Sow little and often for a continuous supply.
Cress
A nostalgic classic for good reason, and almost instant gratification.
- Pot size: Very shallow container or tray
- Spacing: Scatter seeds densely
- Covering: No need to cover, just press lightly onto the surface
Keep moist at all times. Seeds germinate within 1–2 days, and you’ll be harvesting in under a week. Ideal if you want to see results quickly.
Radishes
Compact, colourful, and surprisingly well suited to a windowsill.
- Pot size: At least 15cm deep
- Spacing: Sow seeds 2–3cm apart
- Covering: Cover with about 1cm of compost
Place in a bright spot and keep evenly watered. Seedlings appear within a week, and radishes are usually ready to harvest in around a month.
The Checklist
- Choose a bright windowsill (south or west-facing is best)
- Use containers with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging
- Fill with good quality peat-free compost
- Sow seeds at the recommended depth and spacing
- Water lightly but regularly—compost should stay moist, not soggy
- Expect seedlings to appear within a few days to a week
- Turn pots occasionally so plants grow evenly towards the light
- Harvest little and often to keep plants productive
Once you’ve tasted your homegrown greens, we guarantee this is just the start of your homegrown veg journey!
