Glossy and evergreen, Magnolias are unmistakable, and with their large fragrant flowers (10cm in diameter) they create an impact too. Smaller compared to its siblings, and growing in a narrow column, the ‘Little Gem’ is perfect for courtyard gardens and works well as a specimen (or container-grown) plant too. Despite its name, it will grow tall – up to 8m if you let it.

The underside of the 12cm leaves are rust-brown and contrast nicely with the deep waxy green on their surface. Susceptible to cold winds, they prefer a more sheltered sunny spot. These magnolias are easy to care for and, once established, will demonstrate reasonable tolerance to drought.

If your soil is alkaline then you will need to use additives or ericaceous compost to help change the acidity of your soil; or an easier solution would be to opt for one of our fantastic pots.
Of all the magnolias, the Little Gem is one of the best to keep in a container – just be sure to buy one large enough to allow ample root space and ensure good drainage to avoid root rot. You’ll also need to factor in feeding – with a slow-release fertiliser twice a year (spring and early autumn) to ensure your magnolia stays in peak condition.

You don’t need to prune Litle Gems (unless you’re trying to achieve a particular shape or size) but if you do choose to prune then it’s best done once a year. Removing dead or unwanted branches will promote healthier growth too.
