Hydrangea macrophylla ‘White’ – mophead hydrangea
Description
One of the more compact hydrangeas, the Macrophylla is still packs a punch; it’s large round ‘mophead’ flowers providing a dazzling display of summer colour.
Whether in one of our great pots on your patio or deck, or as a centrepiece in your summer beds, these are firm favourites of British gardens.
Deciduous, they’ll die back in winter, but their glossy ‘toothed’ leaves return in spring and long-lasting flowers more than earn their keep through the summer.
Always in high demand, they make a great gift too!
Available in a number of colours, the tone and shade can be affected by the kind of soil they’re planted in. Growing in alkaline soil will result in pinkier flowers, if your soil is acidic they’ll turn more blue. White hydrangeas do best in neutral soil – and you can adjust the acidity by add lime or wood ash to raise it, or use organic materials, sulfur, or aluminum sulfide to lower acidity.
When planting, we advise using plenty of well-rotted manure or compost and using ‘root grow’ to help them establish. They don’t like to dry out so be sure to keep them well watered during drier months and remove faded flower heads in spring once the frosts are over.
