Description

Flowering from October to March, these compact Hellebores provide much needed colour through winter. With leathery green leaves they feature white flowers with flashes of pale pink and green. Together, they provide lovely texture and contrast and are happy in the garden or in a pot.

Known as ‘winter roses’ they are evergreen, and hardy perennials. When it comes to location they are suited to shady areas (they love a woodland setting!) or in partial sun. As their flowers last well into spring, they provide nectar for early pollinators too.

They stand up well to the winter cold and grow best in evenly moist soil with good drainage. You can combine them with ferns for a great woodland look too.

They should be planted from autumn until late spring and once established, don’t like to be moved again (or divided). They’ll naturally (but slowly) spread to fill a space by self-seeding, though this variety in particular doesn’t spread particularly vigorously.

Naturally undemanding, they need little maintenance beyond removing old flower heads and feeding in late autumn and spring with a slow-release fertiliser (either side of flowering season).

Whilst they can be brought indoors, and are popular at Christmas, they tend not to like the warmth of most houses. They are also toxic to pets.
