Description

Hedera Helix (Common Ivy) is a vigorous evergreen climber with small-sized, lustrous, three to five-lobed, green leaves, 5-7cm long. Unlike other varieties of Hedera the leaves aren’t variegated but their deep green complexion has depth and character, enhanced by pale green veins running through them.

It can be used as a ground cover or for covering a wall; growing relatively fast it can spread up to 4m across and, if climbing, reach up to 12m in height and will grow 50-70cm a year in the right conditions.

Native to the UK, mature plants will ultimately produce clusters of yellowish-green flowers in autumn, and bunches of small dark, berry-like fruits in winter.

Good in all soils, Ivy is also not fussy about light or positioning and is hardy even through winter, though performs best in evenly moist soil away from drying winds and the coldest weather.

Extremely ornamental, this versatile ivy does well as a hanging houseplant – it’s stems hanging down to provide greenery to even dimly-lit rooms. You could even train it up a moss covered pole or stake to create a column of green, great for a corner feature.

A rain lover, if bringing ivy indoors, it’s best to mist the plant every few days and water it when the top couple of inches of soil become dry. If you have pets, keep it out of their way as it can be toxic if eaten.
